TWO councillors have been visiting residents in New Road, near Ilminster, this week to hear their concerns over the road closure.

Cllr Linda Vijeh and Cllr Andrew Shearman, who chairs the planning, highways and transport committee on Ilminster Town Council, visited the site to inspect the ongoing work.

They both welcomed the peace and quiet the road closure had brought, but expressed concerns over the number of blocked drains along the route.

Cllr Shearman said: “If it were to rain heavily the current state of the drains would only make flooding in the area worse.

“The problem is really with the underlying pipes, which have fractured, but at least keeping the entrance to the drains free would help.”

Cllr Vijeh said: “It’s good news that the problem isn’t as bad as was feared.

“I’m doing all I can to ensure that it will be open, even if only partially, as soon as possible.

“Businesses have suffered enough already.”
