PEOPLE in Somerset who are being treated for cancer are being urged to take extra precautions against catching swine flu.
A spokesman for the Somerset branch of the charity Macmillan Cancer Support has warned that people having treatments like chemotherapy are more at risk from swine flu due to suppressed immune systems.
The spokesman said: “There are a few simple precautions you can take to reduce your risk of catching any kind of cold or flu virus, including swine flu.”
Advice includes:
- Avoid crowds where possible, including using public transport, particularly during the rush hour, and crowded shopping centres.
- Ensure you and anyone living with you washes their hands regularly with soap and water, especially when preparing or eating food.
- If you develop any symptoms that might be due to an infection such as a sore throat, coughing, sneezing, feeling sick, diarrhoea, aches and pains or feeling hot or cold and shivery contact your doctor for advice straightaway.
